The Interracial Experience : Growing Up Black/White Racially Mixed in the United States
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (November, 2000)
Author: Ursula M. Brown
Average review score:

From a Parent of an Interracial Child
As a parent of a mixed race child I have been troubled by the extreme lack of research and literature that addresses the adjustment of mixed race children. This book finally addresses this gap. The author highlights the unique emotional and social needs of interracial people. I found her discussion of experiences in the family, community, school and dating that help or undermine the adjustment of interracial children particularly helpful. I enjoyed hearing about their longings, ambitions, social lives and love relationships. I was also very pleased that she challenged some of the myths that have tainted the image of interracial people. The stories of the people the author interviewed are extremely poignant and so is the analysis and interpretation of their accounts. I learned a lot of new information from this book. Most of all, however, it helped me to better understand the needs of my child.

intriguing book
i enjoyed this book immmensely. everyone should read, especally those of mixed heritage. the book helped me understand issues that i went through and showed me that i am not alone in my struggles as an interracial person.

A Tremendous Book
The book is a wonderful discussion of the factors that influence an interracial person's racial identity. Some books I have read on this topic were nothing more than an individual's reflections on the issue. Other books were too scientific and uninteresting. This book, however, is an incredible mix of excerpts from dozens of interviews with interracial people, as well as an on-point analysis of the import of what they are saying. The book also speaks to many things that interracial people think and feel, but seldom discuss with others.

I am glad someone wrote this book as it relates to far more than just black / white mixes. Indeed, it relates to any racial or cross-cultural mix.

Some Knowledge
Thank you for writing the book Investing In The Dream.. My girlfriend insisted I read it and i am glad she did. Although I had some knowledge of investing your book made it so much clearer. I feel better able to prepare myself for retirement. THANK YOU!!!!! Denise M. Bagby

Single Mom
I read your Book and read your columns. The latest column "Financial decisions" featured in The Challenger Newspaper is great. I am a single mother, fulltime employee as well as a parttime college student; I definitely know first hand how expensive it is to raise children. Your book has made the difference.

The Light is on Now
I waited for the book to come out in paper back. That was my first mistake. --what a shame on my part. However, thanks to The Miami Times newspaper where I see your column, I must say that I have been enlightened and inspired by your indispensible information.

Job-Hunting for the So-Called Handicapped or People Who Have Disabilities
Published in Paperback by Ten Speed Press (15 October, 2001)
Authors: Richard Nelson Bolles and Dale Susan Brown
Average review score:

A Wonderful Book
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Written by Dale Susan Brown and Richard Nelson Bolles(Author of What Color is Your Parachute), it is a simple and concise guide to finding a job if you have a disability. It pulls no punches and tells it the way it is.
It gives simple, concise advice on how to conduct a job search, and what to do in an interview. It tells you how keep a prospective employer from getting nervous about your disability, and how to communicate in an interview in an honest and positive way.
If you are person with a disability this is a terrific book, if you have a co-worker with a disability, it is a terrific book, if you have people working for you with disabilities it is a terrific book, and if you are a "normal" person (whatever that is...} it is a terrific book.
The advice in the book leverages the expertise of both authors and is sound and easy to understand. It also helps you to do a better job, once you have employment. The book is highly recommended for everyone!

WOW -- What a book
WOW - What a book, co-authored by Dale Brown and Richard Bolles, the world known author of What Color is Your Parachute. Dale and Richard have developed a book full of concepts, how to and methods for empowering those of us with disabilities to want to seek out employment against the roadblocks that confront the normal job search.

The book is a MUST READ! A "must read" for even people who are currently employed; as it will give you the insight of what a person with a disability will go thru during their job search. Any temporary able bodied person may become disabled at any time in their employed life. Your "employment life" will be altered forever; thru no fault of your own doing.

No one chapter stands out. Each chapter carries its' own weight for the total read of this outstanding document.

I wish the authors great success with an excellent and easy to read reference book and a solid companion to WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE!

The authors have broken down yet another barrier!

Great book for job-hunters with special needs.
This is a great book for the individual with a disability who is thinking about getting off public assistance or who is just planning to switch jobs. This would also be a good book for any employer who might hire an individual with a disability.

Often both employers and prospective employees have misconceptions about what the law says about disabilitiy. The book explains how the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) protects individuals with disabilities. At the same time, it also explains what the ADA will not do.

I particularly liked the section on creative ways to interview for a job. Having a disability may make one seem strange and unfamiliar to a prospective employer. The book suggests creative ways to emphasize how one is also similar to the employer. Even if you do not have a disability, you may still want to read some of these clever suggestions.

It is often difficult to get disability benefits in the first place. This makes returning to work seem a risky proposition: What if you try to go to work and you are really not ready. If you fail, will you lose your disability benefits and have to start all over again? The book explains ways to protect some degree of benefits while easing back into the work force.

The two authors blend their areas of expertise to produce an outstanding book. The book is divided into sections with clear explanations and objectives. In the back of the book there are useful appendices with resources for further help and support.

This book can change your outlook!
I recently had the pleasure of previewing this wonderful book. It is concise and very personable, to say nothing of inspiring. I was reminded of the reasons we should be more conscious of our eating habits. As a lapsed vegetarian, this book inspired me to reevaluate my diet and remember that our food choices have a dramatic effect on our health and our spiritual well-being.

wow!
This is an excellent book. It made me totally rethink how I eat, how much I exercise, actually, my whole lifestyle. It's written so that you don't have to have a phd to understand what Mr Brown is trying to convey. The compact size made it easy to look up points while I was talking to my friends.

I Loved "Live Food Dead Food"
This book is right to the point and gives you all of the essential information for a healthier diet. I loved it. It makes you want to change your whole lifestyle by working out and eating right. Most people don't understand the impact that a diet like this will have on your life. After reading Live Food Dead Food, it all suddenly becomes so clear.

Love's Body

This book gives you a lot to think about
Twenty years ago a friend told me to read Life Against Death. He said it changed his life. I read it and liked it but it didn't change my life. Recently I finally got around to reading this, his second book. I'm afraid I'm too old for any book to change my life, but I thoroughly enjoyed this provocative book. It is a series of meditations, inspired by a wide range of other thinkers who are referenced after each section,as opposed to the unified argument put forward in Life Against Death. As in that book, Freud is an influence, but so is Blake, Buddhism,Roheim, and Nietzsche, who may have provided the aphoristic format. Brown was one of the intellectual gurus of the Sixties, but unlike many others from that time, his ideas hold up thirty years later.

A Masterpiece of intellect and mysticism; a Poem.
This is a profound and learned book that is experienced as much as read. I first found it in college and the reread was an equalling enlightening journey. With insights from Freud, Blake, and buddhist mysticism it destroys the Reality Principle and the traps of literal interpretation. It leads us to know the Silence behind the words.

An extraordinary philosophical journey
Prof. Brown enters into the heart of why we do what we do with references to psychiatry, art, philosophy and history. Yet his extraordinary intellectual approach is emotionally liberating. The book is a demanding but giving book with pleasures reverberating for a lifetime of re-reading.

A thought provoking story of a true american hero!
This book is by far and away the best book I've ever had the pleasure to read! In fact Bravo is just as good and believe that Charlie will be even better. This book should be top seller on any book list!!! I'm very prould to have had the honor to meet the legendary Brown Bear!

Thought Provoking
I met Brown Bear at a book signing at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, WA. A super guy who can swap sea stories with the best of them. I pictured him as I read "Alpha" and his second book, "Bravo." Some parts are difficult to swallow but he weaves a pretty nice tale (I saw an interesting thing or two during twenty-six years on nuclear submarines) and is light years ahead of Clancy when it comes to honest-to-God military information. It's hard to believe a real life hero like Dick Williams exists until you spend some talking to Captain Schaffert. I hope he doesn't keep us waiting long for "Charlie."

Brown Bear - A Must Read...
Loyalty, Betrayal and other Contact Sports(Alpha) by Erzse Publications. Author Brown Bear - Captain Richard SchaffertUSN Rt.DFC(**)

I have just finished reading the above book and want to give it a five star recommendation. The book is a fast moving tale of adventure in the Orient with a sizzling aviation overtone. It is written by a distinguished and highly decorated USN fighter pilot who clearly knows his aircraft stuff and his way around the Orient.

Great yarn which I thoroughly recommend - and a Must Buy.

Jiu Jitsu: The Official World Jiu Jitsu Federation Training Manual: Blue Belt to Brown Belt
Published in Paperback by A&C Black (July, 1998)
Author: Robert Clark
Average review score:

Excellent instruction manual for ju-jitsu enthusiasts.....
Earlier works by Robert Clark have suffered from the 'dark photograph' syndrome found in many martial arts books.

This publication shows the improvement that can be achieved with first-class camera work and proper use of placing Tori and Uke in light and dark Gi (clothing for practise).

Anyone who is making a serious attempt to improve their range of techniques for grading purposes etc. would do well to purchase this book as it is an easy reference to throws, ground techniques and finishes.

I have also purchased the White to Green Belt and the Black belt publications in the same series, which are equally high quality publications.

Buy these books, they are worth every penny in saving your practise time and improving your rate of progress.

A clear, competent and concise instruction book
This book, like the others in this series comes highly recommended.

Robert Clark is one of the biggest names in British ju-jitsu. This book illustrates the moves required to pass his "World Ju-jitsu Federation" grading scheme.

Since he was one of the first on the scene in the UK it has had a great influence.

This book provides a solid foundation for any jitsuka. It is clearly illustrated (with the author performing the moves) and well presented.

A "must have" book.

Great book for any one who wants to learn Jiu-Jitsu.
A great book. I would recommend to anyone. Step by Step instructions. Great for beginners.

The Last Secret
Published in Paperback by Servant Publications (March, 1998)
Author: Michael H. Brown
Average review score:

author embroidered too much--irritating
I have not finished this book. The author's descriptions of Mary are off-putting. For example: "If early images are correct, she had a small straight mouth, a thin chiseled nose, and a drawn look that was sometimes sorrowful. She was of medium height and had brown hair with dark bangs and eyebrows, her face neither long nor round but oval, her hands and fingers tapered, delicate, and long. She was a regular peasant in a small, regular hillside house, and her life had been one of prayer and toil: drawing water, cooking, and repairing clothes. She had subsisted on fruit, fish, and bread; in manner always serene and demure...."

I have not seen the Blessed Mother, but I would be surprised if her expression is "drawn." And I doubt her manner was "always serene and demure." A "regular peasant"? The mother of God, while pregnant, traveled to see her pregnant cousin and stay with her till the birth of her child. At a wedding, she basically told her Son to turn the water into wine.

Contrast the author's description with the words of Julian of Norwich (admittedly a saint and the first woman to write a book in English): "a simple maid and meek, so young she seemed like a mere child--yet the very same age when she conceived. And God showed me then something of the wisdom and truth of her soul In particular, I saw her attitude toward God, her Maker, how she marveled with great reverence when he wished to be born of her, who was a mere and simple creature he himself had made. It was this wisdom, this truth, seeing how great was her Maker compared to her own littleness, that made her say to Gabriel, 'Behold me, God's handmaid.' Then I knew for certain that she was more worthy and more full of grace than all the rest of God's creation, with the sole exception of the manhood of Christ."

Also, I personally dislike the notion that Mary's life was one of "prayer and toil." What about relationships with people? And she had a Little Boy. Didn't she play with Him? I feel, think and believe her life was one of LOVE.

So, the visions are interesting, but the author defeats himself more than a little with perilously distracting--and highly debatable--asides.

Last Secret
EXCELLENT!! An eye-opener! Accurate data. Everyone should read this book and be enlightened.

REVEALING! Human history entwined w/h Mary's Apparitions!
Buy this book. You will benefit highly - if you don't - I can ony say I'll pray for you. This book is excellent! Here is a very fair-handed review of human history and Mary's apparitions throughout. As a Catholic, I find nothing "coincidental" in the linking of plagues and apparitions, wars and apparitions, healings and apparitions - and so on. What I like about this book is that it knits these things together in a sensible fashion. The picture one then begins to see is so revealing! Not all apparitions are, um, Heaven Sent - it speaks clearly on these as well. It is by no means a "gullible" book.

Maggie's Mistake
Published in Hardcover by Avalon (March, 2003)
Author: Carolyn Brown
Average review score:

Charming
Maggie's mistake was in marrying the town's wealthy Southern doctor. Not that it was her idea or her fault. Her pa just read the situation wrong was all. Doc fit her criteria for a husband about as well as a silk bonnet fit a prize sow. Maggie didn't want all that much from life, just a man who could dance -oh, how she loved to dance! - and one who could make her laugh. Uppity Doc Dulanis can't do a reel to save his life, and laugh? Does the man even know how? Follow this mismatched pair as they try to untangle the skein of misunderstandings, lies, and silent pride. The story is charming and one you can share with your twelve year old daughter or your ninety-two year old grandmother.

Maggie's Mistake is the third in Carolyn Brown's series of historical romances set in Oklahoma, Indian Territory, following the land rush. In each of these stories, Ms. Brown builds the town of Dodsworth family by family, story by story in a way that makes it come alive for her readers. Some came with money, others arrived with just the shirt on their back and a willingness to work - much as it really happened. Follow the historical trail, with Emma's Folly, Violet's Wish, and Maggie's Mistake. There are at least two more books to come in this series.

It's Lemons becoming Lemonade
The book starts off with a bang (almost)Maggie's Dad points his shotgun at the good Dr. Everette. He makes the Dr. and Maggie get married immediately. Their lives turns upside down from there. He begins to notice the wonderful qualities in Maggie but his head is still stuck on his plan of marrying a southern belle who seems perfect at the time (but as you read and see Caroline)you will see what he missed in his plan. She can't see her own worth and worthiness to be loved by anyone (It just goes to show what you say to someone can leave a lasting impact). They slowly develop a relationship unawares and fall in love. Family and friends begin to become manipulative to help them to realize how in love they are with one another. To find out how it ends I suggest you take the time for an enjoyable read.

Maggie's Mistake
Everett Dulanis isn't the only one who falls in love with Maggie Listen in MAGGIE'S MISTAKE. Readers will tumble head over heals for this charming, wild Nineteenth Century woman. If Maggie thought before she acted, she'd be a lot better off. Fortunately for Carolyn Brown's readers, Maggie is a free spirit with a distinct mind of her own who acts before she thinks. She can handle a six shooter, run a home and perplex the men she charms like no other woman in Dodsworth, Indian Territory. Read MAGGIE'S MISTAKE and fall in love.
